The Time to Dream is Now

These are extraordinary times. Social distancing and sheltering in place have completely upended our lives in ways we could not have imagined a month or so ago. Many of us have never spent as much time in our homes as in the past few weeks. And never has the idea of home as sanctuary felt as true.

Our time inside has made it clear that our homes have a significant impact on our happiness, creativity, our ability to relax, and conversely, to concentrate. So while waiting for things to go back to normal, give yourself permission to dream about turning your home into one that really works for you. Consider this an opportunity to design for your new home life.

Where in our homes do we find peace and comfort? Where are the flaws that cannot be ignored? Make a list of likes and dislikes and ask each member of your family to do the same. Use this time to refine your vision of what’s desirable.

Find inspiration by:

• Reading articles from shelter magazines and websites.
• Collecting images on Pinterest, Houzz, and from designers’ websites.
• Following new designers on Instagram.
• Researching local architects, builders or designers you might like to work with.

Maybe you will decide to go ahead with the kitchen or master bath remodel you’ve wished for, add a fireplace to the living room, or create a new outdoor space to dine or relax with friends and family.

The changes don’t need to be as extreme as knocking out walls or adding an addition, however. The use of light, color, even the arrangement of furniture can dramatically change how your home feels and how you live in it.

Don’t let being confined indoors stress or depress you. Take this free time to plan for a happier future. Things will change, and when they do, you’ll be ready to take the next steps towards creating the home of your dreams.
