At Larisa McShane and Associates, we embarked on a remarkable project in 2015, one that epitomizes the transformation of cherished memories into sophisticated, modern elegance. Our client, Diane, inherited her childhood home in Villanova, Pennsylvania, and faced a crucial decision: preserve the legacy or breathe new life into the space. Diane, a New York City-based fashion designer, chose the latter, envisioning a modern weekend retreat and family gathering place within the walls of her childhood haven.
Championing this vision required a complete overhaul of the four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath split-level home, originally built in 1957. The challenge was twofold: to modernize the space and reconfigure its layout to align with Diane's contemporary design aesthetics.
Diane turned to Larisa McShane and Associates, forging a creative partnership that would yield stunning results. By blending Diane's high-fashion sensibility with our unique design approach, the outcome is nothing short of breathtaking.
The revitalized home now boasts an open floor plan that seamlessly integrates the foyer, kitchen, living room, dining room, and den into a harmonious 1,200-square-foot expanse, perfect for family gatherings. Preserving cherished elements was equally vital, such as a thriving cherry tree planted by Diane's parents in the side yard. To honor this legacy, we designed floor-to-ceiling windows in the dining area, framing a majestic view of the cherished tree.
Diane's penchant for high-contrast, high-drama aesthetics guided our color choices. Gray provided a calming backdrop, while red and black accents featured in countertops, bar elements, windows, light fixtures, and décor created a striking visual impact.
The kitchen, a focal point of the design, showcases stainless steel accents, European-made glass cabinets, and high-end Miele appliances. A bold red quartz countertop and custom-designed Italian red pendants add flair and functionality. Distinctive flooring choices demarcate different areas, from slate gray porcelain tile in the kitchen to custom stained black hardwood floors in the dining space.
Geometric elements and strong angles accentuate the design, visible in features such as stainless steel sinks and faucets. Automated gray roller shades offer privacy and set the evening mood with ease.
The custom-made dining room table, crafted in Italy, features a gray porcelain top and striking red and orange metal legs. Contemporary dining chairs upholstered in soft gray leather complement the aesthetic, while a black glass linear chandelier emphasizes geometric precision.
In the living room, a mirrored wall conceals an electric fireplace and TV, revealing them only when in use. This project is a testament to the collaboration between Larisa McShane and Associates and our client, Diane. Diane's appreciation for our ability to uncover her unique style and deliver a tailored design speaks volumes.
