Bold kitchens that stand out from the crowd

June 4, 2020 by Larisa McShane

I love seeing kitchens that dare to take a chance with bold colors, unique materials, and statement-making fixtures. In this article, I analyze seven beautiful and audacious kitchens in their design and explain why I believe they work (or don’t). Read more on bold kitchens that stand out from the crowd.

“Moody Blue”

Why it works: This one long wall contains everything the gourmet cook could want, including visual impact. The deep blue cabinets create a stunning framing effect for the center marble wall and countertop, which appears almost like a piece of art on the wall.

“Bringing the Outside In”

Why it works: Floor to ceiling windows bring the outside in so that the “color” in this kitchen is provided by the brilliant views, which constantly change with the seasons. The firm, simple lines of the slate-colored island anchor the room, while the vertical elements of the windows provide a sense of expansive height and openness.

“A Study in Contrast”

Why it works: This non-traditional kitchen is exciting because it doesn’t look like a kitchen we’re used to seeing. The bronze wall cabinets create a solid vertical backdrop, allowing the sleek, horizontal lines of the red brick island to take center stage. The round black counter adds an unexpected asymmetry and softens the sharp edges.

“Hello Sunshine”

Why it works: Lemon yellow isn’t for everyone, but this kitchen reflects its owners’ passion and adventurous spirit. The gray concrete wall allows the sunny yellow cabinetry to take over, making this kitchen feel fun and feisty. The dining room in the kitchen makes it all the cozier.

“Sophisticated Yet Serene”

Why it works: This boldly -patterned marble island and backsplash is a more minimalist sculpture than a workspace. But this is perfect for the cook who likes things uncluttered. The marble pattern provides energy and movement, while the otherwise unadorned surfaces radiate calm.

“Contemporary Casual”

Why it works: With an efficient floor plan and creative use of storage, this inviting kitchen is airy and light. The lovely teal color of the cabinetry gives a feeling of casual yet creative sophistication.

“Too Much of a Good Thing”

Why it doesn’t work: Copper is becoming popular as a counter and cabinet material. But a little goes a long way. Using complementary material on the island would help the copper on the back wall not feel so overpowering.

When designing your dream kitchen, remember that you can be daring and adventurous with colors, materials, and fixtures. And, of course, consult a design professional if in doubt.
